Viking Bronze Odin's Turtle Brooch
This Viking Bronze Turtle Brooch is a replica of a piece found in Norway and dates to the 9th century. The Turtle Brooch has depictions of Odin and his animals. Odin's depiction is on the top and bottom of the main photo just off center. Huginn (thought) and Muninn (Memory) were his pair of Ravens. They are to the the left and right of the Brooch just off center. His two wolves named Geri and Freki which are depicted on either of the ravens. Surrounding the base of the brooch are examples of traditional Viking Knot Work. Viking Turtle Brooches were a common ornament on a traditional women's dress. Viking dresses of this era typically had two straps going over the wearers shoulders. Turtle or Tortoise brooches would be worn just above where these straps would attach to the front of dress. A string or strings of beads and other ornaments would be strung between each brooch. This brooch in 2.75 inches by 1.70 inches and weighs just over 2.75 oz. Having this Viking Bronze Turtle Brooch this light makes it a very functional piece.
